The old apple tree returns home saved from the wood burner
This is a bowl made from a section of an old Apple tree that had succumbed to the ravages of Rot and had become dangerous so it was felled. The piece presented difficult problems the least of which was it safe to turn. Having decided to continue with the project and after donning my face and head shield mask I turned the outer faces on my Record CL1 lathe using an SC3 chuck and a face plate ring also turning a socket for remounting on my SC3 to turn the inside of the bowl. The bowl is finished with 3 coats cellulose sander sealer, 3 coats Melamine lacquer and finished with an ultra fine pad and Liberon clear wax. The grain pattern of the bowl is absolutely stunning so the effort was more than worth it, had the old adrenaline running a bit for a time until I had it balanced. The bowl was handed back to the lady from whose tree it had come, which at the time loosing her apple tree was hard to bear. She has since planted a new tree and the bowl made from her old tree has pride of place in her lounge, much better than ending up in the wood burner as was its original destination.
